Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are optical fiber sensors that can be used to measure both strain and temperature. Due to their robustness, FBG sensors can be more easily embedded into materials than traditional electronic sensors. In this thesis a procedure to embed FBG sensors into metallic structures was developed. This embedding procedure used traditional machining, along with adhesive to embed FBGs into metallic parts. This new embedding procedure requires no specialized equipment and allows any metallic part to be retrofitted with embedded sensors.en
