With the increasing importance of electrified transport, the need for high energy density storage is also increasing. Possible candidates include lithium air, sodium air and lithium sulphur batteries. One of the major components of all three battery types described is the electrolyte. The electrolyte dictates many of the electrochemical properties. In this thesis, the role of electrolytes in these battery types are examined; modifications are introduced and the resulting properties are extensively studied.en
